Aucayacu camp, 3 – 7 days, with Speedboat

Similar to the descriptions below, but you’ll get to the base camp via speedboat, which takes a few hours, rather than the (glorious) riverboat ferry, which is an overnight trip.

If you’re travel time is short, this is a good option.

 

Aucayacu Camp, 7 Days

Day 1

Pick up at the airport, transport to your accommodation.

Tour and explore Iquitos; visit rubber-boom era houses (Iron House, Fitzcarraldo, etc), visit Belén Market, Pasaje Paquito (Medicine Lane in Belén Market), Belén houseboats, lunch, etc.

Transfer to the port, board the riverboat. Private cabins are booked for the 13 hour ride to Genaro Herrera. A beautiful ride; amazing sunset; confluence of three rivers; Amazon, Marañon, Ucayali, the sights and sounds of the surrounding jungle.

Day 2

Arrival in Genaro Herrera.

Breakfast, some time to explore Herrera and then continue the journey by Peke-Peke (motorized dugout canoe) on the Aucayacu River for three hours, deeper into the jungle.

Watch for a variety of birds, keep an eye out for pink and gray river dolphins.

Arrival at Aucayacu Camp. Explore the area, set up, relax, lunch, etc.

Night canoeing to catch a glimpse of various animals; frogs, fish, alligators, birds, rodents, monkeys, etc

Day 3

Day-hike for 4+ hours and make camp; sleeping under giant trees, deep in the jungle, surrounded by astonishing biodiversity. Explore and learn about plants, medicinal plants, water-vines, etc.

Day 4

Day hiking and exploration of the jungle. Experience Sapo as used by the Matsés

Day 5

Day hiking to look for different birds and rodents, monkeys, frogs and other jungle animals.

Day 6

Day hike and return to Aucayacu Camp.

Collecting of the Ayahuasca vine, and preparation of the sacred medicine.

Fishing, swimming in the Supay Lake (with river dolphins if you’re lucky!).

At night: Ayahuasca ceremony led by Jairo Jerena.

Day 7

Relax, eat, explore and visit the village.

Return to Genaro Herrera by Peke-Peke.

Board the riverboat for the fantastic , overnight 13 hour ride back to Iquitos.

Arrive in Iquitos approximately 5 am.

Transfer to the hotel, airport.

Full Adventure – 10 Days

Day 1

Pick up at the airport, transport to your accommodation.

Day 2

Arrival in Genaro Herrera. Breakfast, some time to explore Herrera and then continue the journey by Peke-Peke (motorized dugout canoe) on the Aucayacu River for three hours, going deeper into the jungle; watch for a variety of bird, and keep an eye out for pink and gray river dolphins.

Arrival at Aucayacu Camp. Explore the area, set up, relax, lunch, etc.

Night canoeing to catch a glimpse of various animals, frogs, alligators, birds and monkeys

Day 3

Hiking and camping in the jungle, sleeping under the old, giant trees. Night walk in colpa.

Day 4

Continuing the adventure – botanical walk to learn about different trees and medicinal plants and experience with Sapo as used by the Matsés.

Day 5

Continue on, deep in the jungle, fishing in small lakes. Observe birds, monkeys and other animals.

Day 6

Day-hike to observe different species of birds and rodents, snakes, etc

Day 7

Continuing the adventure. Experience NuNu, a tobacco powder as used by the Matsés.

Day 8

Make way back to camp by the river Aucayacu.

Day 9

Aucayacu camp, collect and prepare the ayahuasca for the evening’s ceremony.

Day 10

Bathe in the river, eat well , get to know the people of the village, return to Genaro Herrera for the overnight riverboat return to Iquitos.

Arrive in Iquitos approx 5am.

Transfer to hotel, airport.

 

Matsés Expedition – 17 Days

Day 1

Pick up at the airport, transport to your accommodation.

Tour and explore Iquitos, visit Belén Market, Pasaje Paquito (Medicine Lane in Belén Market), Belén houseboats, lunch, etc.

Transfer to the port, board the riverboat. Private cabins are booked for the 13 hour ride towards Genaro Herrera. A beautiful ride; amazing sunset; confluence of three rivers; Amazon, Marañon, Ucayali and the sounds of the surrounding jungle.

Day 2

Arrival at Genaro Herrera, meet people, explore the town, eat breakfast, and continue the journey by peke-peke boat to Aucayacu Camp

Day 3

Set out by canoe upstream on the Aucayacu River for 3 days, 7 hours each day watching the flora and faun, the river, the jungle fly by.

Day 4

Continuing the journey by canoe, watching for different birds, Huacamayos, toucans, monkeys, caimen.

Day 5

Continuing the journey and arrival at Baradero or tails camp. ayahusaca ceremony at night

Day 6

Begin the trek to the Lobo River for 3 days 6 hours, each day walking.

Day 7

Continue towards the Lobo River

Day 8

Continue walking and reached the Lobo River. Night excursion.

Day 9

Construction of the raft and a second night excursion.

Day 10

Travel downstream on the Rio Lobo, rafting for 3 days, each trip lasting 7 hours.

Day 11

On the Rio Lobo, fishing in different lakes, observing wide variety of birds, monkeys, etc.

Day 12

Continue the journey and arrival at Remoyacu, a Matses community on the Rio Galvez, overnight stay in the village.

Day 13

Visit the people of Remoyacu, explore the village.

Day 14

Different excursions, fishing lake, and watcing for various animals such as the Hoatzin and giant River Otters.

Day 15

Continuing the trip down the river Galvez by peke-peke (motorized dugout canoe), to the community of San Mateo. Experience Sapo, NuNu, and get to know the town.

Day 16

Continuing the journey towards the community of Angamos on the Yavari River and the Peru-Brazil border. Visit the Brazilian town of Palmeiras. Overnight stay.

Day 17

Take a small plane to Iquitos. Duration of the flight: 45 minutes. PLEASE NOTE: The option to return by plane may no longer be available. Contact Us for further info on these longer expeditions.

Arrive in Iquitos, transfer to hotel.

Transfer to airport.
